Orton-Gillingham tutoring is a specialized and highly effective approach that I utilize to support students in improving their reading and writing skills while building confidence and a love for literacy. Unlike a one-size-fits-all approach, I take an individualized approach, tailoring each session to align with the unique needs, current skills, personality, and interests of the student. Progression is marked by mastery before moving on to subsequent skills.
This approach is deeply rooted in Structured Literacy, a term endorsed by the International Dyslexia Association, encompassing programs like Orton-Gillingham that adhere to the Science of Reading. I use this approach to craft personalized, structured, and multisensory plans for teaching reading and vocabulary skills,
This method uses explicit, direct, sequential, systematic, and multisensory instruction for reading, which is effective for all students and crucial for those with dyslexia. The approach involves breaking down reading and spelling into smaller, manageable skills, progressively building on these skills over time.
Students are engaged in seeing, saying, sounding, and writing letters. Then they use their understanding to decode and encode words. I use a multisensory approach to learning, that focuses on sight, hearing, touch, and movement. This is particularly beneficial for students with dyslexia who may lack a foundational level of phonemic awareness.
I utilize Orton-Gillingham's strategies to create a supportive learning environment, guiding students through a comprehensive, structured, and multi-sensory process that not only addresses their immediate needs but also empowers them for lifelong reading success.
